The magnificent waterfall is found along the Kyabamba River, just a stone’s throw from Kisiizi Hospital in Rukungiri District, near the border with Kabale District. The beautiful Kisiizi Waterfalls drop about 40 metres into a deep gorge before the River Kyabamba flows on. Historically, Kisiizi Waterfalls are said to have played a significant role in shaping the moral values of the Bakiga people. The site was once used as a place where unmarried girls who became pregnant were thrown from the cliff as a harsh punishment intended to discourage premarital sex and serve as a warning to other young women in the community.

According to local tradition, when an unmarried girl became pregnant, she would be escorted by her father and brother to the top of the waterfall, where she would be pushed over the cliff to her death. This practice was believed to preserve family honour and discourage immoral behaviour within society.

However, one question that has continued to puzzle many people is why the men responsible for the pregnancies were never subjected to the same punishment. This apparent double standard highlights the unequal treatment of women in traditional societies. The story also echoes the biblical account of the adulterous woman, who was accused and brought before the crowd for punishment, while the man involved in the act was never mentioned.

This act went on but stopped when one of the victims was brought to the site but had a perfect plan in that she held her father and brother and all the three of them fell down the cliff and died. This is when the practice came to an end because members of the society thought the girls would not allow dying alone but instead with their brothers and fathers.

Besides being a cultural site, the area around Kisiizi waterfalls is also a birding Paradise with numerous species of birds including the Pied Crows, Yellow-backed weavers, Grey-crowned cranes, African black-headed Oriole, Long-chested eagles, white-browed robin-chat, African Paradise flycatcher, Malachite Kingfisher, Black-headed weavers, Grey Herons, Ross Turaco, African firefinch, Augur Buzzard, Double-toothed weavers, Haddad Ibis, African Harrier Hawk, Hammerkop, yellow-billed storks, Lesser striped swallow, African pied wagtail, black-winged red Bishop, Purple-breasted sunbirds, Scarlet-chested sunbirds, Speckled mousebirds, Mottled widowbird, Mackinnon’s Fiscal, Black kites, Bronze Mannequin, the Emerald spotted wood Dove and many others. This makes bird watching one of the must-do activities around the waterfalls.

How to Reach Kisiizi Waterfalls

Kisiizi Waterfalls are located approximately 400 kilometres southwest of Kampala, Uganda’s capital city. The waterfalls lie about 22 kilometres south of Rukungiri Town and approximately 46 kilometres north of Kabale Town, making them easily accessible by road. The journey takes visitors through the scenic Kigezi Highlands, where they can enjoy breathtaking views of rolling hills, lush countryside, and terraced farmland before arriving at this spectacular natural attraction.
